A network can appear healthy until a busy day, an equipment failure or a provider outage exposes a hidden weakness. Regular checks across the gateway, switching, cabling, WiFi and internet connections help find avoidable risks before they interrupt users and operations.

Gateway and security
Confirm supported firmware, secure administrative access, current configuration backups and appropriate security policies. Review CPU, memory, VPN load, DHCP, DNS and traffic-control behaviour during busy periods. Administrative accounts should be individual, protected and reviewed.
Switching, PoE and cabling
Check uplink capacity, port speed, errors, loops and power budgets. Look for damaged patch leads, poor terminations, unidentified cabling and unmanaged switches added outside the design. Confirm that core equipment is protected by suitable power backup.
WiFi coverage and capacity
Review unavailable access points, client distribution, busy channels, interference, retries and roaming behaviour. Compare complaints with location and time. Significant layout, occupancy or application changes may justify a new validation survey.
Internet performance and resilience
Track availability, latency, loss and utilisation on every connection. Confirm that the primary service still meets the requirement and that backup connectivity, health checks and failover rules work. Test critical applications while the backup is active.
Monitoring, records and responsibility
Maintain an equipment inventory, topology, circuit details, warranty status, configuration history and escalation contacts. Alerts need an owner and a response process; collecting data without reviewing or acting on it does not improve reliability.

How often should a business network be reviewed?
Continuous monitoring should be supported by scheduled operational reviews. A quarterly review is a useful baseline, with additional checks after material changes, faults or site works.
Is monitoring enough on its own?
No. Monitoring must be paired with sensible thresholds, clear ownership, investigation and remediation. It also cannot replace physical checks, documentation or controlled resilience testing.
What are common warning signs?
Repeated port errors, high gateway load, unavailable devices, growing channel utilisation, intermittent packet loss, expired support, undocumented changes and untested backups all deserve attention.
