Why Is My Business WiFi Slow?

Slow WiFi is a symptom, not a diagnosis. The cause may be weak coverage, radio interference, overloaded airtime, a faulty cable, a constrained switch or gateway, the internet connection, or the cloud service being used. The quickest route to a lasting fix is to identify where the delay begins.

Start with the symptom

‘The WiFi is slow’ can mean weak signal in one room, video calls breaking up, devices disconnecting while moving, an application taking time to open or the entire site becoming unresponsive. Record the location, time, device and application involved. A repeatable symptom is much easier to isolate than a general impression.

Coverage is not the same as capacity

A device can show WiFi bars and still perform poorly. Walls, lift shafts, fire doors, shelving and building layout reduce usable signal. In busy areas, an access point may provide adequate coverage but insufficient airtime for the number and type of active devices.

Interference consumes airtime

Neighbouring WiFi, overlapping channels, non-WiFi radio sources and poorly planned transmit power can make devices wait or retransmit. Adding more access points without a channel and power plan can make the problem worse rather than better.

Look below the access point

Every wireless connection eventually reaches a cable, switch, gateway and internet circuit. Damaged cabling, negotiation errors, insufficient PoE, switch loops, saturated uplinks, DNS delays, security inspection or an overloaded gateway can all feel like a WiFi fault to the user.

Only when the internet circuit is the actual constraint. Poor coverage, interference, airtime congestion, cabling, switching or gateway problems will remain after a broadband upgrade.

Should we add another access point?

Not without checking the existing coverage, channels, power and client demand. An extra access point in the wrong location can introduce more contention and interference.

Why is WiFi slow in only one part of the building?
